WAXHAW (AP) — A pilot has died after an amateur-built airplane crashed near an airport in Union County.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane crashed in some woods near the JAARS-Towsend Airport on Monday afternoon. The name of the victim has not been released.
The FAA says the details surrounding the crash are still unknown.
Airport officials say the plane’s pilot was making an approach to the airport and lost control of the aircraft above a wooded area.
But a witness said the pilot was trying to take off when the small plane banked sharply and plunged nose-down into the woods.
