BUIES CREEK (AP) — A meeting of some of North Carolina’s top scientists is discussing what would happen if the state is opened up to natural gas drilling that promises an economic windfall but may carry risks to the air and water.
The North Carolina Academy of Science begins its annual meeting today at Campbell University with a discussion of the future for natural gas exploration. The talk is scheduled to cover the role of natural gas in the state’s future energy needs, geological considerations, and what might happen to the environment.
The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources last week released the results of its study that found the controversial method of natural gas drilling called fracking can be done safely if regulations are put in place first.
