Fire department demonstrates new, tougher radios

SALISBURY — The Salisbury Fire Department demonstrated its new, more rugged radios today at the Innes Street station.
The department will receive 50 portable APX 600XE radios by mid-June. The radios, which are made by Motorola Solutions, are submersible, dual-sided and capable of tracking a firefighter’s location inside a structure.
The need for a tougher radio was recognized after the death of two firefighters, Justin Monroe and Vic Isler, who both died four years ago while battling a fire at Salisbury Millworks.
The demonstration included completely submerging a radio in water and dropping it to the ground.
