SALISBURY — Are you interested in starting a vegetable garden or a “cutting garden” in your backyard? There are a few seasoned gardeners who know what they want to grow, when to order seeds, how to start seeds inside and when to plant the seedlings outside.
There are far more gardeners with seed packets unopened from last year wishing they knew how to get a garden going.
No matter which group you belong to, you are invited to a presentation on seed starting Tuesday, Feb. 14. David Overcash, agriculture instructor at South Rowan High School, will speak at the monthly meeting of the Rowan County Master Gardeners Volunteer Association.
You might think that a “master gardener” is an expert at all things having to do with gardening. When it comes to starting seeds, there are so many ideas and methods that work for some and not for others. Overcash will discuss the methods that work best for him and then will throw the floor open to questions. Everyone who attends will find that no question will go unanswered.
There is so much to learn on this topic that you will go away with both new information and enthusiasm for getting your seeds started for this summer’s garden. This is the first of many presentations being offered to the community on gardening.
“The Third Friday” will offer hands-on programs throughout the growing season to the community on topics you have requested through responses to surveys and discussions with the Master Gardeners.
The presentation is at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Auditorium B and C at the Extension Office, 2727 Old Concord Road. For directions, please call 704-216-8970. The Master Gardeners will be selling their favorite gardening gloves to raise funds for their community opportunities. Donations will be accepted. Refreshments will be served following Overcash’s presentation.
