SALISBURY — A Salisbury elementary school was locked down for most of the day after receiving a “suspicious phone call about a child custody issue.”
Rita Foil, public information officer for the Rowan-Salisbury School System, said Overton Elementary went into “code yellow” lockdown as a precautionary measure this morning upon advice from law enforcement officials.
The school was locked down for the remainder of the day.
Under a code yellow lockdown, Foil said classes continue as usual, but all doors are locked and secured. Students are also not allowed to leave the building and all outside activities are nixed.
“Parents can enter, but doors are locked whenever they enter or leave the building,” she said.
Foil said it’s rare that schools enter lockdown mode, but the measure if for the “safety of our students.”
Principal Betty Tunks sent out an automated ConnectEd message this afternoon to let parents know about the incident.
Foil said the lockdown is not expected to continue through Friday.
