Area sports briefs: Livingstone women stumble

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team fell to Chowan 70-68 in CIAA action on Thursday at New Trent Gym.
Tyesha Tharpe scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Blue Bears (6-11, 2-4).
Chowan got its final six points at the free throw line to hang on.
Livingstone went on an 11-0 run to grab a 60-54 lead with 6:16 left.
Talaya Lynch scored 23 points for the Hawks (7-9, 2-4).

College baseball
Four Catawba Indians were named to the preseason All-Southeast Region team by the ABCA and Rawlings.
Starting pitchers J.J. Jankowski and Nick Lomascolo were named to the squad, along with third baseman/pitcher Chris Dula and DH Garrett Furr.
All four are returning All-SAC players.
Both Dula and Furr were 2011 All-SAC First Team selections as well.n Limestone has been voted the top team in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. The Saints were 34-18 last season.
Mount Olive was picked second, Belmont Abbey third and Erskine fourth. Pfeiffer tied for fifth in the voting with North Greenville.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills varsity boys walloped Hickory Christian 87-46 Thursday.
Vismantas Marijosius scored 18 points to lead the Eagles in scoring. Povilas Dambrauskas scored 16 points and Moussa Doucara added 15.
North Hills (11-5, 3-2) plays today against Statesville Christian at home.
The North Hills middle school boys team beat Success Institute 66-26 for a conference win.
Wes Fazia scored 20 points to lead the Eagles (7-1, 1-0). Garrett Beck scored 17. Ian Bradshaw had 11. Chris Norris added eight, and Will Johnson contributed six.
North Hills plays Tuesday against Park Ridge Christian.
The North Hills middle school girls team beat Southlake Christian 30-16.
Sierra Eagle had 10 points to lead the Eagles (5-3, 2-0), while Dajah Glenn scored nine.
Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart’s varsity boys lost 62-41 at Forsyth Country Day.
The Dolphins will be playing the rest of the season without leading scorer Joseph Harrison. (broken fibula and tibia).
The Dolphins (12-11, 2-2) were led by Reilly Gokey’s 16 points, while Max Fisher added 10 points and eight steals. Spencer Storey, Walker Latimer and Arun Kelly-Rajan had five points each. Latimer had 10 rebounds.
The Dolphins play their next three games at home.
Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys defeated Hickory Christian 33-24 behind Will Taylor’s 14 points.
Eric Turnbull scored the game’s first six points.
Jack Fisher grabbed nine rebounds in addition. Michael Childress scored five points.
College hoops
In Brevard’s 84-43 SAC loss to Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday, Darius Moose (Carson) scored 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and pulled down five rebounds.
Women’s hoops
Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) scored two points in Charlotte’s 77-66 win against La Salle on Wednesday.
George Washington’s Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) made both her field-goal attempts and had two assists in a 63-42 romp against Rhode Island on Wednesday.
College football
The annual Blue-White Spring Football game is set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 31.
Lunch will follow the game at 11:30 a.m. in Kirkland Lobby of Goodman Gym at a cost of $10 per person.
Coach Chip Hester will speak at that time about the outlook for next fall and the 2012 schedule.

Shaw has named Robert Massey as its new head football coach. Previous Shaw coach Darrell Asberry left to take the head job at Texas Southern.
A N.C. Central grad and former NFL defensive back, Massey has been on the Shaw staff five seasons, including the last two as defensive coordinator.
Prior to joining the Shaw staff, Massey coached several years at Livingstone, including a stint as interim head coach.
Catawba entertainment
Youngsters from Tuttle Elementary in Catawba County here will perform at Catawba’s home basketball games with Newberry on Saturday afternoon.
A jump rope team will be the halftime entertainment for the women’s game. Unicyclists will perform at halftime of the men’s game.
The women’s game tips at 2 p.m. to open the doubleheader.
Junior Bobcats
Salisbury Parks and Recreation has a few spots left for its Jr. Bobcats girls league for ages 7-15.

Rowan Little League
Rowan Little League baseball and softball registrations are from 9-3 on Jan. 28 at Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Boulevard.

Once again there will be a Pre-TBall league for ages 3-4.
Baseball cost is $55 for Coach Pitch and T-ball (ages 3-8). Cost is $75 for ages 9-10, 11-12 for 13-14. League age is as of April 30, 2012.
Softball cost is $55 for girls 8-under. Coach Pitch (ages 6-8). League age for 10U, 12U and 14U is as of December 31, 2011. Cost is $75.

China Grove youth baseball and softball registration starts Jan. 21 at Dale’s Sporting Goods and lasts through Feb. 18.
Baseball fees are $50 for Coach Pitch (ages 5-6 and 7-8), Juniors (ages 9-10) and Seniors (ages 11-12).
Softball fees are $50 for Coach Pitch (ages 5-7), Juniors (ages 8-10) and Seniors (ages 11-13).
League age is as of April 30, 2012.
