KANNAPOLIS — A 14-year-old girl is in critical condition and a second teen hospitalized after they ran into the path of a van Sunday evening, police said.
The teens were taking part in a scavenger hunt and had just gotten a clue around 7:45 p.m. when they ran across Mount Olivet Road between South Cannon Boulevard and South Ridge Avenue to get back into a waiting car, the Kannapolis Police Department said.
The girl and a 15-year-old boy didn’t see a Toyota Sienna van going west on Mount Olivet Road just west of Cannon Boulevard. And the driver of the van, 54-year-old Deborah Davis Helms of Heather Glen Road, couldn’t avoid hitting them.
Both teenagers were taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord. The girl had a severe head injury and was listed in critical condition today, police said. The boy was listed in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Police Department’s traffic division is investigating. No charges are pending, Capt. Kenneth Jackson said.
