Area athletes update: Moose gets double double

Area athletes update …
Brevard’s Darius Moose (Carson) racked up his second straight double-double on Saturday.
Moose had 15 points and 12 rebounds in a 73-65 SAC win against Mars Hill. He had four assists and one turnover while playing 38 minutes.
The sophomore is averaging 12.1 points and 7.5 boards this season.
Roanoke’s Alex Weant (Salisbury) made a pair of free throws in Saturday’s 85-70 loss to Hampden-Sydney.
Women’s basketball
Brevard’s Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) hit a 3-pointer in Saturday’s 60-57 SAC loss to Mars Hill.
Shaw’s Shemieka Brown (North Rowan) scored nine points in a 73-60 CIAA win against Virginia State on Saturday.
Gardner-Webb’s Jessica Heilig (Salisbury) had six points and seven offensive rebounds in Saturday’s 63-53 loss to Charleston Southern.
Charlotte’s Ayanna Holmes (Salisbury) was 4-for-4 on free throws in the 49ers’ 58-54 win at Xavier on Saturday.
Ayana Avery (West Rowan) hit two 3-pointers for Radford in Saturday’s 80-70 win against Campbell. Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) had four points and three rebounds for the Highlanders.
Taylor May (South Rowan) made her only field-goal attempt in Catawba’s 70-67 win against Anderson on Saturday.
De’Rya Wylie (Salisbury) scored six points for Elizabeth City State in a 67-48 loss to J.C. Smith on Saturday.
Olivia Sabo (East) averages 5.1 points per game for Catawba Valley Community College.
Pro basketball
Bryan McCullough (North) is averaging 8.1 points for the Halifax Rainmen of the National Basketball League of Canada.
McCullough scored eight points on Thursday and five on Saturday.
His best game of the season was 16 points against the Oshawa Power on Christmas Eve.
Junior Hairston (West) returned to action after the Christmas break and scored 25 points (three 3-pointers) and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead his Thor Thorl team to a 90-73 win in Iceland on Thursday.
Shamari Spears (Salisbury) plays for the London Lightning in NBL-Canada.
Spears is averaging 11.9 points per game. He scored 16 against the Summerside Storm on Friday.
Carlos Dixon (South) was recently named Asia-basket.com league player of the week.
The 30-year old swingman had 32 points, five 3-pointers, five rebounds and five assists for Fukuoka Rizing in a 93-88 victory.
