CHINA GROVE — A China Grove man was airlifted after being struck by a vehicle Thursday night on U.S. 29 North.
China Grove Police said Tina Jackson, the driver of the vehicle, told officers that she saw someone in the road about 9:30 p.m. and tried to stop.
Officers said Jackson, of Rockwell, was traveling north on U.S. 29 near the Liberty Street intersection in a 2000 Chevrolet when the crash happened. As Jackson swerved, the man reportedly hit the left side of the vehicle.
Police identified the man as Gene Edward Kirby of 1250 Brookwood Drive.
Police Chief Eddie Kluttz said Kirby was treated on the scene by EMS units and later taken into emergency surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.
Kluttz said the victim was listed in stable condition this morning and was awaiting additional surgeries.
A CMC-Charlotte spokeswoman said Kirby was not listed in the hospital’s registry.
