CHARLOTTE — The Mint Museum will be open free to the public on Jan. 7-8 for a weekend of celebrations, music, food, special programs, and more before the “Romare Bearden: Southern Recollections exhibition” closes in Charlotte. The exhibition will then travel to the Tampa Museum of Art.
The Mint-organized major retrospective of one of America’s most preeminent African American artists and foremost collagists has received attention in national publications ranging from The Wall Street Journal to The New York Times. During the homecoming weekend, the public will get the chance to see two more “living billboards” of Bearden’s work brought to life with local musicians, a key element of BooneOakley’s advertising campaign for the Mint.
The public is also invited to contribute to Memory Train: Celebrating Community Through the Power of Remembrance, a video collage of residents’ reflections inspired by the exhibition. The Memory Train project is tapping into community responses on the themes of migration, memory, home, family, and loss. Video excerpts from a planned documentary that will become a permanent part of the community’s record will premiere during the weekend.
All events occur at Mint Museum Uptown, 500 S. Tryon St. at Levine Center for the Arts.
