Judy Goodnight of Kannapolis provided this photograph, probably from the 1920s, of a class at Cleveland High School — now Cleveland Elementary. Her father is Robert Ervin Faust, who is second from right in the middle and holding the snake. Faust was born in 1907 and lived to 1991. Ralph Pheifer, a cousin of Faust’s, is the student over his left shoulder (under the pine cone). The teacher, according to the back of the photograph, was B.W. Griffin, and the principal was C.R. Hutchinson. It’s a good bet this was a science or biology class, judging from the snake, pine cone, things preserved in jars, stuffed owl and hornets’ nest scattered among the students.
