Prep Football: Nixon the new head coach at North Rowan
By Ronnie Gallagher
SPENCER — The first thing Joe Nixon told the North Rowan football players assembled in the auditorium today was right to the point.
“I think you can win a lot of ballgames,” he said. “My No. 1 goal is to win championships. We’re going to do things right in the classroom, in the community and on the field.”
And with that, the Joe Nixon era began at North Rowan.
The long-time West Rowan assistant was introduced this afternoon as the new Cavaliers’ head coach, replacing Tasker Fleming, who resigned recently after four years.
Nixon, a former All-American lineman at Catawba, continues a family tradition. His grandfather and father were head football coaches in North Carolina. He has helped Scott Young get the West Rowan program to four straight state 3A championships, winning three. He now takes that winning attitude to Spencer.
A story on Nixon’s new home will appear in Wednesday’s Post.
