Sandy Reitz retired from the Rowan County Department of Social Services more than a decade ago, but she hasn’t forgotten about her families.
As a social worker, Reitz began seeing the families she was helping as her own. This week, she made a Christmas Happiness contribution in honor of staff members who still work for Social Services.
She has been contributing to the fund since before her 1999 retirement.
“I’ve sat on the other side. It’s hard to put into words the pressure that our families were under to provide something for their children for Christmas,” she said.
Reitz also worked in administration for Social Services.
She thinks of the families and of the staff at such a busy time of the year.
In years past, she has given to the fund in honor or memory of friends and family, but this year decided to give in honor of DSS staff and administration.
Reitz also volunteers in the community.
“It reminds our community across the board of the need that’s always there. But probably this year is one of the years it’s very necessary for us to be conscientious of our families,” she said.
Bring contributions to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or mail them to The Salisbury Post, Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, NC 28145-4639.
