Area athletes update: Turchin honored

Area athletes update …
Emory & Henry placekicker Matt Turchin (West Rowan) was a second team All-ODAC pick.
Turchin was successful on 11 of 14 field goal attempts this season. The 11 makes were a school record.
The junior also extended his streak of successful PATs to 45. He was 32-for-32 this year.
n True freshman linebacker Jared Barber (Davie) started for West Virginia in its “Backyard Brawl” win against Pitt and made four tackles.
nChris Smith (West) made one tackle for Arkansas in Friday’s loss to No. 1 LSU.
n Wake Forest’s Tristan Dorty (West) made two tackles and was credited with a QB hurry in Saturday’s 41-7 loss to Vanderbilt.
n Virginia’s K.P. Parks (West) was held to 17 yards on seven carries in Saturday’s 38-0 loss to Virginia Tech.
College men’s basketball
Darius Moose (Carson) had seven points and 11 rebounds while playing 32 minutes in Brevard’s 90-80 loss to Belmont Abbey on Saturday.
VMI’s Drew Absher (Davie) got to play three minutes in a lopsided loss to Ohio State in Columbus and had two rebounds.
It was the second game Absher’s played in this season.
College women’s basketball
Shi-Heria Shipp (Salisbury) scored six points for George Washington in an 83-59 win against Radford. Ayana Avery (West) hit two 3s in that game for Radford, while Ashia Holmes (Salisbury) had four points, three assists and five rebounds.
n Shaw’s Shemieka Brown (North Rowan) scored six points in Saturday’s 55-49 win against Belmont Abbey.
n Brevard’s Katelynne Poole (East Rowan) hit two 3-pointers in an 85-65 win against Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday.
