Authorities chased a man in a white Volkswagen at speeds up to 110 mph through Spencer and Salisbury before stopping him and finding a large stash of marijuana in the car.
The chase began on I-85, when a Rowan County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to stop the man for a minor traffic violation. Speeds quickly went over 100 mph along Long Ferry Road and Salisbury Avenue in Spencer. At the intersection of 14th Street and North Main Street in Salisbury, the man stopped the car, facing southbound in the northbound lane of North Main Street, and began to run. He jumped a fence in the 1400 block of North Man, but was quickly stopped and taken into custody. He had been driving a white Volkswagen four-door sedan with Virginia plates.
Officers found a large amount of marijuana in car; Sheriff Kevin Auten estimates between 25-40 pounds.
At least nine law enforcement vehicles are on the scene, including Sheriff’s Office, Salisbury Police and Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
People in the neighborhood reported hearing squealing tires, but by the time they got outside, the man was in custody.
Investigators are still searching the car.
