Salisbury woman killed by train

SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman was killed Sunday after being struck by a train on Peach Orchard Road.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, 59-year-old Rita Jackson Kinney, 1125 Briarwood Terrace, was killed instantly at about 1:30 p.m.
Authorities said they found a 2005 Ford Taurus near the railroad’s intersection. The vehicle was registered in her name.
Witnesses told authorities, according to the report, that they saw the woman walk from the car to the tracks just moments before the train arrived.
Authorities said a note was found in the vehicle and investigators are treating the incident as a suicide.
