Preview: Statesville at East Rowan
Published 12:00 am Thursday, October 20, 2011
nTime: 7:30 p.m.
nRecords: Statesville 4-4-1, 3-1 NPC; East Rowan 1-8, 1-4 NPC
nSeries: Has not been much fun for East. The Greyhounds lead 8-2.
Eastís most recent win came in 2009, when Statesville was down a lot and the Mustangs were finding ways to beat a lot of people.
The only other East victory was a stunning 35-34 overtime win in the first round of the playoffs in 1991.
nLast meeting: East made it a game with the Greyhounds in 2010 before losing 42-21. Tristan Mumford scored four TDs for the Hounds in that one when he was a running back, and the Mustangs will have to deal with him again tonight as Statesvilleís QB.
nLast week: Statesville ventured outside the league and lost 35-21 to Alexander Central. East got its first victory of the year by whipping South Rowan on the road 21-0.
nNext week: Statesville will be heavily favored at home against South Rowan. East Rowan ends its season tonight. The Mustangs only have 10 games scheduled.
nGame notes: A dozen or so seniors will wrap up their careers tonight in front of a home crowd that should be buoyed by Eastís strong performance on the road last week.
On paper, East doesnít have the speed or talent to deal with Statesvilleís athletes for 48 minutes, but the Mustangs wonít roll over and this could be reasonably close.
East has enjoyed a lot of positives the last few weeks, with the main one being the emergence of sophomore QB Noah Drye. The Mustangs shouldnít have to worry about the QB position again until 2014.
Players such as junior DB Dalton Bost and sophomore DE Dock Corpening have helped the young Mustangs make strides defensively, but slowing down Mumford, a sure D-I player, is a tall order for any team.
