Area sports briefs: East runners 8th

East Rowan’s boys placed eighth out of 29 teams in the Invitational Race held Saturday at Beeson Park in Kernersville.
There were 199 runners.
Brad Oden (24th, 17:16) led the Mustangs.
Other East runners were Mark Almeida (29th, 17:21), Joseph Furtado (40th, 17:38), Graham Lyerly (66th, 18:00), Jason Deutsch (19:06), Josh Rowell (19:23) and Cole Hamilton (20:28).n East Rowan’s freshmen and sophomores finished third out of 27 teams in the unofficial JV State Championship meet held Saturday in Kernersville. There were 239 runners.
Conor Honeycutt led the Mustangs. He was sixth in 17:04, with Cal Meyers seventh at 17:05.
Other East runners were Darin Basso (19th, 17:39), Justin Allen (28th, 17:53), Jason Troutman (49th, 18:29), Jason Basso (52nd, 18:32), Drew Kluttz (18:59), Matt Fleming (19:07), Spencer Bost (19:29) and Victor Pereira (19:54).
College football
Mars Hill quarterback Jon Richt (339 passing yards) and Lenoir-Rhyne DB Michael Green were named SAC players of the week.
Green won for both defense and special teams for his heroics in a triple-OT win against Brevard.
CIAA award winners included St. Augustine’s receiver Jamian Smith (16 catches, 152 yards) and Elizabeth City State RB Daronte McNeill (233 rushing yards, four TDs).
