A Salisbury man who was driving a car that collided with a motorcycle on Sept. 11, killing two people, was charged Friday night.
According to the report, Dexter Leon Jones, who was released from prison just seven days before the wreck, was charged by Salisbury Police with possession of cocaine, driving while license revoked and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Jones, 31, was pulling out of the Wilco-Hess service station in the 3400 block of South Main Street about 10 p.m. on Sept. 11 when his 1998 Oldsmobile collided with a southbound motorcycle, killing Roger Dale Carriker, 39, of Linwood, and Heather Elizabeth Cross, 22, of Salisbury, instantly.
Jones was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem with critical injuries. Jones’ passenger in the Oldsmobile, Harvey Ratcliffe Jr., was taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
According to the Department of Corrections, Jones was released from prison on Sept. 4 after serving more than a year for violating probation on convictions of felony selling and distributing drugs on school grounds, felony possession of cocaine and felony possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities said Jones had crack cocaine in his possession at the scene. Alcohol was initially also believed to have been a factor in the wreck.
Jones was booked at 8 p.m. Friday and was given a $500,000 bond.
