West Rowan students charged with assault

Two West Rowan students were charged on Wednesday after deputies say they assaulted two students with a cigarette lighter.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, 16-year-old Anthony Steele and 16-year-old Desmond Jackson were arrested at school after two students told authorities that the teenagers held a cigarette lighter to the backs of their heads.
Steele and Jackson were each charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
The incident reportedly happened after the students left P.E. class on Tuesday. It was reported on Wednesday.
P.E. coach Joe Nixon told officers that he had seen the students with a lighter.
Steele had just returned to school on Tuesday after receiving an out-of-school suspension for larceny of personal property, the report said. Steele was accused of taking another student’s iPhone and iPod.
Steele was also charged with misdemeanor possesion of stolen property.
Steele, 300 Grannys Place, Woodleaf, was released after posting a $3,000 bond.
