CROP Walk Sunday

ALISBURY — Local residents will walk to fight hunger Sunday at the 33rd annual Salisbury-Rowan CROP Walk.
The event will be held at City Park. Registration starts at 2:30 p.m. at Shelter No. 1 on Lake Drive and the walk starts at 3 p.m.
CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. The Rowan County event is sponsored by local churches, but its reach is worldwide. Twenty-five percent of the money raised will stay in Rowan County to support Rowan Helping Ministries, Meals on Wheels and Main Street Pantry in China Grove. The balance goes to Church World Service, which serves some 80 countries with relief ministries. Paula Troxler, one of the organizers, said about 14 churches are taking part this year.
Troxler said local CROP Walk organizers don’t set a fundraising goal but the event usually generates about $8,300, “which is pretty remarkable for churches coming together the way they do.”
