SALISBURY — A former North Rowan High School teacher accused of sex offenses with a student faces up to three years in prison for violating probation on separate convictions.
Zachary Paul Greene was jailed today after District Court Judge Marshall Bickett activated his suspended sentences for a June 28, 2011, driving while impaired conviction in Rowan along with convictions in Cabarrus County in 2010 for driving while impaired and carrying a concealed weapon.
Greene had received terms of probation for each of those offenses, but they were running concurrently. The longest was 36 months.
Greene will be transferred to a prison under the N.C. Department of Correction to serve out the sentence, but Assistant District Attorney Tom King asked Bickett to keep the former teacher in the county jail this week. He is scheduled to be in court Wednesday on the three 2010 felony counts of taking indecent liberties with a student.
King told Bickett those charges may be resolved after that hearing.
Greene, 30, sat alone in the back of the second-floor courtroom Tuesday morning before his case was called. Wearing jeans and a tie, he whispered to his attorney while court officials discussed the probation violation. Greene never spoke aloud during the hearing.
Green was charged in April 2010 by the Spencer Police Department with having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old North Rowan High student while he worked there as an English teacher and coach.
In June 2010, he was charged with driving while impaired. Police said at the time that Greene had a .25 blood-alcohol level, more than three times the legal limit.
Another former North Rowan teacher, Matthew Miles Price, is serving a five-year sentence after violating his probation for sexual activity with students.
Price was originally charged with 40 felony counts of sexual activity with students, but the charges were consolidated to five counts after he accepted a plea agreement in August 2010.
Price violated probation in July, authorities said, when it was determined that he was in possession of pornographic material.
