Prep Football Preview: West Iredell at East Rowan

Published 12:00 am Friday, September 23, 2011

Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: West Iredell 3-2, 1-0 NPC; East Rowan 0-5, 0-1 NPC
Series: East leads 4-2
Last meeting: It was no contest in 2010, with the Warriors romping 49-6
History: When West Iredell opened in 1974, its very first opponent was East Rowan. That game went well for the Mustangs, who were NPC champs. They rushed for roughly a million yards and cruised 52-0.
Rick Vanhoy, now an East assistant principal, was one of the running backs in that romp.
Speaking of Vanhoy, during the 1975-76 season, he scored 42 points in a basketball game against West Iredell — still a school record.
In more recent times, one of the better games played by East during Brian Hinson’s coaching tenure was an exciting 48-27 win at West Iredell in 2007. East had 549 yards of offense in that game, as Thomas Lowe, Shawn Eagle and Trey Holmes turned in one big play after another
Last week: West Iredell turned it on in the second half and whipped South Rowan 47-15; East lost 20-7 at Carson
Next week: West Iredell has an open date; East is on the road at West Rowan
Game notes: Speed kills, so the Warriors don’t look like the ideal matchup for East.
QB Sayer Robinson threw for a school-record 416 yards against South Rowan, with four TD passes going to Kam Summers. West Iredell was unbelievably explosive, scoring 40 points in the final 19 minutes.
East defensive players such as big sophomore lineman Dock Corpening and junior DB Madison Hedrick played very well last week, but they are facing an even tougher challenge.
East’s offense, with QB Jordan Phillips starting to hit some passes, is showing some signs of life.
