SALISBURY — A man charged in 2008 with his family for a string of burglaries crossing three counties pleaded guilty in court this week to theft.
Christopher Hargett, 22, pleaded guilty to felony larceny.
His sister, Elizabeth Hargett, 24, also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor larceny.
The district attorney’s office dismissed misdemeanor injury to real property charges against Christopher Hargett and his sister pleaded to a lesser charge. She was originally charged with felony aiding and abetting larceny.
The two are accused of taking an air conditioning unit from a house. The owner of the house, which is located on Dunn’s Mountain Road, is in the military stationed in Hawaii and had put the house up for sale.
Christopher Hargett received seven to nine months with the N.C. Department of Correction, which was suspended to 24 months of supervised probation. Elizabeth Hargett received 45 days with the N.C. Department of Correction, which was suspended to 18 months of supervised probation. Brother and sister must split the $1,255 cost of restitution to the homeowner and each was ordered to pay court costs and $205 to their court appointed attorneys.
Christopher Hargett was released from prison in January for attempted larceny stemming from the 2008 burglaries that occurred in Rowan and Stanly counties.
His father, mother and two other brothers were also charged for their involvement in the burglaries.
Christopher Hargett’s attorney, Jeff Morris, told the court his client was able to maintain gainful employment. He would be able to pay any fees and was in fact paying other relatives’ probation fees.
He and his fiancee have a 1-year-old daughter, Morris said.
Elizabeth Hargett’s attorney, Bays Shoaf, told the judge his client was working toward her GED at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
She has no children and was looking to return to work at Harmony Labs.
Elizabeth Hargett, according to the N.C. Department of Correction website, has no prior convictions.
