Rowan-Cabarrus Community College
After 34 years of service to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and the community, Dr. Jarrett T. Chandler, vice president of college advancement, is retiring.
Better known around the community as Jerry Chandler, he leaves a legacy of generosity and positivity.
“As sad as we are to be without his positive attitude, dedication and generous contributions, we’re excited to launch a legacy in his name to honor his commitment to the college,” said Dr. Carol S. Spalding, president.
Chandler’s illustrious career at Rowan-Cabarrus includes many achievements. He began his career at Rowan-Cabarrus as an instructor of radiologic technology in 1977. Since that time, he has served the college in numerous roles, including assistant to the president and associate dean of human resources, dean of instruction, dean of personnel and administration, executive vice president, vice president of advancement and interim president.
On behalf of the college, Chandler formed partnerships with colleagues and community members to transition the college from Rowan Technical Institute to Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He also worked collaboratively to raise in excess of $25 million for Rowan-Cabarrus organizations and college programs and facilitated the incorporation of the college foundation.
“Jerry has not just been an influencer at the college — he’s also played an important role in Rowan and Cabarrus counties through his volunteer work,” said Carl M. Short Jr., chairman of the Rowan-Cabarrus Board of Trustees.
Chandler is a former chair of the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce and Rowan United Way, and has a rich history of giving back to the community with organizations such as Rowan Tourism Development Authority Board, Rowan Rotary Club, East Rowan Optimist Club, Boy Scouts of America and Faith Baptist Church.
“I’m very proud of this college and the people in it,” Chandler said. “I know that the college will continue to make a positive impact on the community.”
Jeanie Moore, current vice president of corporate and continuing education, will broaden her role at Rowan-Cabarrus to cover college advancement.

“Chandler has played a vital role in making Rowan-Cabarrus what it is today. We can’t thank him enough for all that he’s done,” said Spalding. “We know that the college will continue to impact the lives of Rowan and Cabarrus counties in his absence because of the foundation he has helped lay.”
In retirement, Chandler plans to spend time with family — especially his grandchildren — and reconnect with nature. His love for camping and fishing will dictate his activities — and even includes plans for a long-anticipated trip to Alaska.
