COOLEEMEE ó Back in the middle of the 1930s Great Depression, people here were still having some good times. One such occasion was the annual Pet Show & Contest held on old Park Hill.
Two pet entries have gone down in the history books, both owned by the same family. Jack Moodyís pet monkey usually won some honor at the contest. One year his artistic mother, known to all as ěNan,î painted their white rooster in a rainbow of colors. It, too, won a prize.
To bring back these good times, there will be a Pet Show & Contest at this yearís Textile Heritage Festival, to take place Sept. 24 on the Zachary House grounds.
Pets will be judged for the most unusual, the smallest, the ugliest and the cutest. Enter your pets on festival day by bringing them inside the fence at the Cooleemee Police Department behind the Zachary House. Have them there at 2:45 p.m.
The entry fee is $1. Make sure that your pet is suitably secured by a leash, cage or whatever is appropriate. Prize ribbons will be awarded at 3:45 pm.
