LANDIS — After nearly two years on the job, Landis Police Chief Brian McCoy has resigned.
McCoy, who began as chief Feb. 1, 2009, filed his letter of resignation Tuesday with Town Manager Reed Linn.
McCoy said he inherited family land in Statesville that he would likely have to give up if he made a permanent relocation to Rowan County.
McCoy, who lives in Iredell County, said he had intended on moving to Rowan County, but circumstances beyond his control have made that impossible for now.
He said in his resignation letter that a move to Rowan County would necessitate selling his property and “at this time, I do not believe it would be in the best interest of my children, my family, or myself to do so.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the residents of Landis.
“During my service I have developed many close ties to the community. It is those ties that I will miss most at my departure,” he said.
The letter did not detail McCoy’s plans.
He was an officer with the Spencer Police Department for six months and formerly worked for the Statesville Police Department for about 15 years.
Linn said he plans to recommend the town board appoint an interim chief until a permanent replacement can be found.
