Prep soccer
Salisbury’s boys soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 3-1 win against Central Cabarrus on Tuesday night at Ludwig Stadium.
The Hornets trailed 1-0 early when the Vikings (1-1) scored on their first shot attempt of the night.
“They got on a goal on a great, left-footed shot that beat (goalkeeper Connor) Miller high right,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “You just have to tip your hat on that shot. Just a great strike.”
Salisbury responded quickly on a goal by Bobby Cardelle for a 1-1 deadlock at the half.
Cardelle’s throughball set up Zachary Sukkasem for the go-ahead goal about 20 minutes into the second half, and Kenne Bonilla scored for insurance.
John Grant and Emmy Turcios had the other assists.
“Offensively, we really were on a roll, put some great shots on goal and ordinarily would’ve scored several more times,” Parrish said. “Central had just outstanding goalkeeping from two different kids. They made some full-out, diving stops.”
Salisbury (4-0) is home again tonight at 7 p.m. against East Rowan.
Salisbury’s jayvees opened with a 3-2 win against Central. Adolpho Ortega had two goals, and David Perez also found the back of the net.
Carson’s boys fell to West Davidson 2-0 in Tyro on Monday.
On Tuesday, the Cougars rebounded to beat North Rowan 4-1 in China Grove.
Freshman Aaron Lippard scored the first goal of the night, and sophomore Nelson Granados, junior B.J. and sophomore Fox Correll finished the scoring for the Cougars.
Carson plays at Concord tonight.

Minor leagues
Burlington’s Rudy Brown (South Rowan) got an opportunity to start on Tuesday and did well.
Brown allowed a run in the first inning against Johnson City but settled down after that. He lasted 41/3 innings and piled up eight strikeouts while allowing just that early run.

The Washington Nationals prospect has 15 doubles.
Whit Merrifield (Davie) went 1-for-4 and scored Wilmington’s only run in Tuesday’s 11-1 loss to Potomac.
Merrifield, who starred at South Carolina, probably has had a good enough season to move up to Double A next year in a Kansas City farm system that is ranked as one of baseball’s best. He’s batting .260 with 20 steals, 26 doubles and 65 runs scored.
