A happy ending
Elsewhere in the animal kingdom, weíre happy to report a tail-wagging ending to a ěsad dog story.î
That was the headline on an Aug. 15 letter to the editor from Sandra Wise of Rockwell, who was distraught that a stray dog she had befriended and fed was taken to the county shelter after someone called animal control. Wise had wanted to take the small dog into her home, but it was mistrustful of people ó even those bearing food ó probably because of earlier abuse.
On Wednesday, Wise sent a follow-up letter, relating that a ěcomplete strangerî had called to offer help. The stranger, whom she identified only as ěTim,î said he and his mother wanted to pay for the dogís adoption.
ěBy 11 that morning,î Wise writes, ěwe were at the shelter adopting the little white dog.î
Thanks to these generous folks, Wise says, ěthe dog now has a new home and a new name, which is Mary.î
But that isnít all. Wise says her phone kept ringing with people wanting to help her adopt the dog. She wanted to thank all of the animal lovers anxious to save ěMaryî from the gas chamber.
ěSo the ësad dog storyí has a happy ending,î Wise concludes. ěBut thatís not true for so many that are left behind.î
