The NFL notebook …
BEREA, Ohio ó Colt McCoy picked up his cellphone, dialed Brett Favre’s number and hoped one of his idols might help him out.
The Browns quarterback got Favre’s assistance ó and more than he could have dreamed.
“He’s an outstanding guy and I learned a lot, ” McCoy said, “so I was thankful for him being open to me even coming down there. It’s the first time we had met. It was a lot of fun.”
OK, but the big question:
Did Favre look ready for another comeback?
“We didn’t even go there,” McCoy said, laughing. “We talked football. We stayed up late and worked out and he really helped me. For a guy who has played in some versions of the West Coast for 20 years, he’s a great resource to have and I appreciated him being willing to spend a couple of days with me and help me out with some things.”
REDSKINS
ASHBURN, Va. ó John Beck will start the second preseason game for the Washington Redskins.
Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Beck will get the nod for Friday’s game at Indianapolis.
The former Miami Dolphins player is battling former Florida star Rex Grossman for the starting job. Grossman started last week against Pittsburgh and completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown in the first half.
Beck sat out the game with a strained groin.
DOLPHINS
DAVIE, Fla. óAnother hot, grueling practice had ended for the Miami Dolphins, and as the weary players trudged off the field, new assistant coach Bryan Cox caught up with two of his pass-rushing pupils to resume an earlier discussion about technique.
Coach Cox had thought of something more he wanted to say.
His hair is flecked with gray, but otherwise Cox hasn’t changed much since his last season with the Dolphins in 1995, when he was a passionate chatterbox who made headlines and Pro Bowls. The ex-linebacker is still a passionate chatterbox seeking sacks, only now he’s doing it as a pass-rush coach.
“It’s like being home again,” Cox said after practice Tuesday.
GIANTS
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ó New York Giants placekicker Lawrence Tynes’ bruised right thigh is feeling much bette.
SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT
NEW YORK ó The NFL supplemental draft originally scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed.
At least five players are known to be eligible for the supplemental draft, including former Georgia running back Caleb King.
Former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor gave up his final season with the Buckeyes following an NCAA investigation at OSU. He wants to get into the draft.
