West Rowan and A.L. Brown begin football scrimmages today.
West will entertain West Forsyth, Alexander Central and Central Cabarrus at 6 p.m. in Mount Ulla.
A.L. Brown travels to Mooresville for a four-team scrimmage that includes Hopewell and Hickory Ridge.
Minor leaguers
Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered and doubled in a four RBI night in Albuquerque’s win against Salt Lake. Sands now has 21 home runs this season at the Triple A level.
• Rudy Brown (South Rowan) pitched two perfect innings Tuesday in Burlington’s 8-5 win. It was the second save of the season for Brown, who has a 2.54 ERA.
Local golf
In the first round of the Dogwood State Junior Championship, Eric Edwards was tied for second in the boys 14-15 division with a 74.
In the boys 16-18 division, Roy Dixon III is tied for ninth at 73, Alex Nianouris is tied for 16th at 74, Troy Beaver is tied for 22nd at 75, and Alex Austin is tied for 63rd at 85.
Lily Yataware is 20th in the girls division with a 96.
• The Corbin Hills Golf Association played a odd and even putts compeition Tuesday with Kristi Laton, Mary Seaford, Shirley Baucom and Ruth Bowles winners.
Laton won low gross while Seaford won low net and Baucom and Bowles tied for first in low putts.
• Betsey Edgeworth shot a 71 to win the low net competition in Women’s Golf Association play Thursday. Jayne Hubbard (72) placed second and Blance Glover (78) was third.
•Fifty-eight GARS members played at Crescent on Monday.
Low ‘A’ flight player with a net of 67.02 was Ross Howard.
Low ‘B’ flight player with a net of 65.57 was Dick Hatoway.
Low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 67.05 was Lanny Corriher.
Low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 63.53 was Gerald Osborne.
Parents meeting
Salisbury High is holding a meeting for all parents of students participating in fall sports (soccer, football, cross country, volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf and cheerleading).
The meeting is set for Sunday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. in the SHS cafeteria.
Coaches needed
Four coaches are needed for the East Rowan fall baseball league.
Coaches are needed to coach high school players for two games per weekend for eight weekends.

Knox physicals
Physicals are offered to anyone wanting to play sports at Knox Middle School on Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m in the gym.
