Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot even-par 71 Friday on the second round of the Nationwide Tour Cox Classic in Omaha, Neb.
Gealy, who shot an opening 63, is tied for 26th at 134.
Gealy made two bogeys and two birdies Friday. He needed 34 putts in his second round after needing just 24 on Thursday.
n In the N.C. Amateur Match Play Championship at Bermuda Run, Alex Nianouris won his first-round match against Caryís Kevin OíConnell 3 and 2 on Friday, but he lost to Greensboroís Leif Neijstrom 2 and 1 in the Round of 16.
n Legion baseball
Cherryville defeated Greenbrier, Va. 11-9 Friday to stay alive in the Southeast region final at Riley Park in Sumter, S.C.
Sumter topped Toa Alta (P.R.) 5-0 in the second game.
Gaffney led Dothan (Al.) 2-0 in the sixth inning when the rains came and suspended the remainder of the game until 9 a.m. today.
n Youth track
Events continue in the AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans.
n Alex Crook won another medal with a sixth in the 1500 final for sub-youth boys. Crook was time in 4:33.90.
n Payton Russell was sixth in a 200 semifinal for midget girls in 27.06 seconds.
n Jaleesa Smoot was 11th in a youth girls division semifinal in 25.81 seconds.
n Parents meeting
Salisbury High is holding a meeting for all parents of students participating in fall sports (soccer, football, cross country, volleyball, girls tennis, girls golf and cheerleading).
The meeting has been moved to Sunday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. in the SHS cafeteria.
n Baseball coaches
Four coaches are needed for the East Rowan fall baseball league.
Coaches are needed to coach high school players for two games per weekend for eight weekends.

n Independent leagues
David Thomas (Catawba) is enjoying a strong season with the Grand Prairie Air Hogs of the American Association.
Thomas is batting .273 with eight homers, seven triples, 16 doubles and 21 steals in 25 attempts. He has 41 RBIs.
n Also in the American Association, Lincolnís Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) has allowed only one run in his last nine relief appearances. Sherrill has struck out 25 in 241/3 innings.
n Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) is 4-5 with a 4.86 ERA for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks of the American Association.
n Wood bat leagues
Forest Cityís Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) struck out 13 and held Asheboro to four hits in a 5-1 road win in Game 1 of a best-of-three first round CPL playoff series.
Trey Holmes (East Rowan) had one of the hits for Asheboro.
Thomasvilleís J.J. Jankowski (Catawba) pitched six innings allowing just one earned run and striking out six in the HiTomsí 5-4 win in 10 innings against Gastonia.
n College swimming
Catawbaís menís swim team has been recognized as a scholar all-academic team.
The Indians had a 3.28 GPA to rank fourth in Division II.
Rising senior Mikael Karlsson (3.29 cumulative GPA) was recognized individually.
n SAC basketball
Jim Boone has been hired as menís basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Wesleyan athletics director Ken Tyler announced Booneís appointment Friday in a news release.
Boone comes to Wesleyan from Tusculum College, where he had served as menís basketball coach since 2005.
The Winfield native also has been a head coach at California (Pa.), Robert Morris and Eastern Michigan.
n Pro baseball
The Kannapolis Intimidators rallied for four runs in the eighth inning in a 5-2 win against Delmarva Friday night.
Dan Blackís two-run triple off Tim Adelman gave Kannapolis the lead for keeps. Steve Upchurch worked three relief innings to get the win.
