SPARTANBURG, S.C. ó Cam Newton found a new way to wow the Carolina Panthersí fans at practice on Wednesday night.
The teamís No. 1 draft choice laid a big block on cornerback R.J. Stanford on a play during contact drills, drawing applause and ěooohsî from those watching practice. It also drew a couple of shouts from Carolina defensive coaches. The 6-foot-5, 248-pound Newton has worn the quarterbackís red jersey that keeps him free of heavy contact. Newton walked back to the huddle with his hands up after hitting Stanford, then before the next play ran over to smooth things over with 2nd year defensive back.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton may have gotten overly excited during the drill, but showed teammates heís willing to do whatever he can to help them succeed.
RETIRED
Former St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger tells ESPN.com he is retiring after 11 NFL seasons.
Bulger was selected for the Pro Bowl twice and passed for 22,814 yards, 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions.
BROWN TO EAGLES
BETHLEHEM, Pa.ó The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms Tuesday with veteran running back Ronnie Brown, who spent his first six seasons with the Miami Dolphins.
The 29-year-old Brown rushed for 4,815 yards and 36 touchdowns and caught 184 passes for 1,491 yards with Miami. He ran for 1,000 yards in 2006 and made his only Pro Bowl team in 2008.
Brown is the seventh major acquisition the Eagles have made in the past week, along with defensive linemen Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins, cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha, offensive lineman Evan Mathis and quarterback Vince Young
JETS
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ó David Harris was rewarded by the New York Jets for his patience.
The playmaking linebacker signed a four-year deal Tuesday night after Harris originally looked into an extension last year. The deal told The Associated Press that the contract is worth $36 million, with $29.6 million guaranteed.
REDSKINS
ASHBURN, Va. ó Washington Redskins cornerback Phillip Buchanon will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday.
BRONCOS
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ó The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with former New England Patriots defensive lineman Ty Warren.
Warren was released by the Patriots on Friday. ESPN reported the deal was worth $10 million over two years with $2.5 million guaranteed.
Warren was the 13th overall pick in the 2003 draft out of Texas A&M.
PACKíS HOUSE
GREEN BAY, Wis. ó Denied the traditional Super Bowl champions’ visit to the White House during the NFL lockout, the Green Bay Packers finally are headed to Washington.
The Packers will visit the White House on Aug. 12, one day before their first preseason game in Cleveland.
Even as recently as last week, it wasn’t clear if the Packers and White House would be able to work out a date.
REED TO SEAHAWKS
RENTON, Wash. ó The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms with free agent kicker Jeff Reed.
The former North Carolina Tar Heel finished last season with the San Francisco 49ers after playing the majority of his first 10 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Reed was released by the Steelers after nine games in which he converted 15 field goals in 22 attempts.
BROWNS
BEREA, Ohio ó Cleveland Browns punter Reggie Hodges is out for the season after tearing his Achilles’ tendon during practice.
LIONS
ALLEN PARK, Mich. ó Detroit Lions rookie defensive tackle Nick Fairley had surgery on his injured left foot Wednesday.
