The N.C. Department of Transportation is closing a 2-mile section of I-85 South near the Yadkin River on Saturday, July 30; Sunday, July 31 and Monday, Aug. 1, to demolish the N.C. 150 bridge over the interstate.
The closure will extend from milemarker 83 (N.C. 150) to Clark Road (Exit 85). On all three days, it will start at midnight and end at 6 a.m. the following day, weather permitting.
During the closure, motorists traveling on I-85 South must take the following detour route:
Take the Clark Road exit (Exit 85);
Turn right at the top of the exit ramp;
Turn left onto Old Salisbury Road;
Turn left onto the N.C. 150 on-ramp and follow it back to I-85 South.
Law enforcement officers will be stationed along the detour to help traffic move safely through the area. While traveling in the work zone, motorists are advised to slow down, pay attention and follow the posted construction signs. NCDOT scheduled the closure for the overnight hours to minimize the impact to traffic.
The demolition work is part of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project, the stateís top mobility project. Crews will demolish the N.C. 150 bridge over I-85 South on Saturday and Sunday. They tore down the N.C. 150 bridge over I-85 North on Wednesday, July 27.
In their place, contractor Flatiron-Lane will build a reconfigured, more efficient interchange. The first phase of the project, which includes this work, is scheduled to be complete by January 2013.
