Members of Congress should join hands, seek wisdom
My wife and I watch the Jerry Lewis telethon every year as he brings in money for “Jerry’s kids.” We make sure we see the last few minutes of the show, when he sits on his stool and sings “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
We would like to see the body of lawmakers in Congress join hands and stand as Americans (not Democrats, Republicans, independents or Tea Party members) and ask God (as he said in the book of James) to give them wisdom to do the job they were sent there to do.
God said he would give wisdom to anyone who asks, if you ask in faith, for if you don’t ask in faith, you are like a reed in the wind, blown from side to side. He will do nothing for a man like that.
The people of this great country have sent you to serve in Congress in faith that you would do the right thing for them. Therefore, stand up, join hands and ask God to give you the wisdom you need to accomplish the job you were sent there to do.
“Walk on through the rain, walk on through the storm … and you’ll never walk alone.”
God bless you all, and God bless the United States of America.

No property owner is an island
Regarding Bruce La Rue’s July 25 “My Turn” column:
Long ago, I remember a teacher telling the class that no man (or woman) lives as an island; we survive as a community. I, too, believe in property rights, as Mr. La Rue does. But unlike the hardline property-rights advocate’s belief that the individual owner’s rights trump everything else, I believe we need to consider the effect of an individual’s actions on the whole community.
The tall tower proposed for Mt. Ulla will have negative consequences without any positives, except for the owners. Not only will it be an unsightly eyesore, it will be a hazard for pilots flying in and out of Miller Airpark. We have already fought this battle once, so why are we doing it again?
In California, “medical” marijuana is being grown legally. Maybe we can change the law to provide for “medical” marijuana to be grown in Rowan County. Now that would boost a farmer’s income! Or maybe we could convince some of the big hog producers from the eastern part of the state to relocate to Rowan County. I expect the property rights advocates would say fine. Until it happened next to their homes.
