SALISBURY ó With temperatures expected to approach 100 degrees today, the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory that begins at noon today and lasts through 8 p.m.
The high temperature will combine with humidity to make it feel as hot as 105, the weather service said. That could mean danger for people who work outside and people who donít have air conditioning.
High temperatures will also be in the upper 90s Saturday and Sunday.
The agency advises people to take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening.
Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
If someone suffers heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 911.
To help older residents who donít have air conditioning, Rufty-Holmes Senior Center is continuing its summer fan giveaway program. The program, which began in June and runs through the end of August, has given out more than 230 box fans so far and has more to distribute, Susan Davis with Rufty-Holmes said in an email to the Post.
ěOur goal is to reach as many county residents as possible, and to reach those who need the most extra help with cooling,î she wrote.
To be eligible for a free fan, recipients must be: Rowan County residents; over the age of 60; have a specific need for a fan, such as having no air conditioning or in need of supplemental air movement for health reasons.
People with central air conditioning are not eligible.
