Area sports briefs: Lentz shoots 62

Salisburyís Kevin Lentz shot a torrid 62 at McCanless on Wednesday, one shot off the course record.
Lentz had eight birdies and 10 pars on a very tidy scorecard.
His previous best round was 66, which heís shot three times.
Lentz was playing with Shane Benfield (who shot a 66) and Chris Shackleford.
n Salisburyís Troy Beaver shot 70 (32 on the back nine) at Sapona Country Club on Thursday and qualified for the Carolinas Junior Championship.
Beaver tied for second place, two shots off the pace.
A round of 76 was needed to advance. China Groveís Davis Richards shot 79.
n Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 75 in Thursdayís first round of the $800,000 Nationwide Childrenís Hospital Invitational being played in Columbus, Ohio.
n A benefit golf tournament for Debbie Barrier Plummer, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, will be played at Corbin Hills on Aug. 13.
The tournament will use a Captainís Choice format. Fees are $50 per person or $200 per team. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start beginning at 2 p.m.

n Salisburyís Frank Adams shot a second-round 73 on Thursday in the Egolf Tour stop in Aiken, S.C.
Adams is tied for 17th after two rounds at 139.
n Youth baseball
The Rowan 9-10 all-stars fell 11-8 to Durham in six innings on Tuesday at Brevard despite out-hitting their opponents 14 to 8.
Rowan bounced back Wednesday to beat Greenville 12-8 in the double-elimination event. Rowan advanced to the championship game but needed to beat Durham twice to win the state title.
n The East Rowan 11U all-stars finished second in the state with an 11-6 record.
n East finished the Invitational Tournament in Statesville with a 2-1 record, the District Tournament in Randolph County with a 3-2 record and the state tournament in Yadkin County with a 6-3 record.
East was the National League champion, while Yadkin County was the American League champion.
East fell to Yadkin County in the championship game on Wednesday.
The team played nine games in five days in the state tournament. There were 12 teams in the tournament.
East Rowan finished third in the state in 2010, playing the most games with 18, and played the most games this year with 17.
Team members are Matthew Kimrey, Matthew Messina, Colby Myrick, Paiton File, Sean Perry, Brycen Holshouser, Trey Dry, William Peeler, John Owen, Chase Earnhardt, Logan Ridenhour and Jake Kepley.
Coaches were Lane Kepley, Travis Ridenhour, David Earnhardt, David Owen and Rob Dry.
Supporters included Genesis Health Care-Salisbury Center, Fiberon Decking, Curtís Boat and Ski Club, Dr. Norman Nakaji, Castaways and Hendrix BBQ.
n Minor leagues
The Seattle Mariners sent Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) back to Triple A Tacoma on Thursday.
Seager went 3-for-22 in seven games with the Mariners.
n Hudson Valleyís Craige Lyerly (East Rowan, Catawba) hit his first homer of the season on Thursday in an 8-7 loss to Staten Island.
Lyerly homered leading off the second inning. It was the third homer of his two-year pro career.
n Albuquerqueís Jerry Sands (Catawba) homered in his first at-bat in Thursdayís game against Oklahoma City. It was a blast to center field and was his 15th homer in 49 Triple A games this season.
n Kannapolis whacked seven doubles but still lost to Asheville 8-4 on Thursday. Dan Black and Kenneth Gilbert collected two doubles apiece.
n Bristolís Keegan Linza (North Rowan) allowed two runs, both unearned ó throwing errors were made on two potential double-play balls ó in an 8-2 loss to Greeneville on Thursday.
Linza struck out one in his inning of work. Linza (0.90 ERA) hasnít walked a batter yet, and heís struck out 13 Appy League hitters.
n Whit Merrifield (Davie) belted his 21st double of the season for Wilmington on Thursday in a 7-5 loss to Myrtle Beach.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) doubled home a run in Hagerstownís 3-0 win against Augusta. It was the ninth double for Moore. He has 25 RBIs.
n Independent leagues
Fargo-Moorheadís Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) struggled on the mound on Wednesday (six earned runs), but he still got a win in a 15-8 victory against Lincoln.
Ward lasted five innings and bumped his record to 4-5.
n David Thomas (Catawba) hit his fifth triple for Grand Prairie on Wednesday.
Thomas is batting .273 with six homers, 51 runs scored, 14 steals and 37 RBIs in 60 games.
