D.J. Webb has dominated on the mound for the Mocksville American Legion team this summer.
Webb (West Rowan, Catawba) is 5-0, plus two saves, in seven starts and six relief appearances. Webb has thrown four complete games. He has 54 strikeouts and five walks in 601/3 innings.
West Rowan’s Matt Miller also has been strong on the mound for Mocksville. He’s gone at least seven innings in each of his last three starts and owns a 3-1 record.
• Mocksville stayed a half-game back of Rowan County in the Southern Division race with a 12-8 win over the Mooresville Legends on Monday night.
Mocksville finishes the regular season tonight at home against Kannapolis and will tie Rowan for the division title with a victory. Rowan would still be the division’s No. 1 playoff seed based on the “runs allowed” tiebreaker.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples celebrated Independence Day by playing 18 holes at McCanless. The format used was six holes of Modified Alternate Shot; six holes of Captain’s Choice, and six holes of Texas Scramble in a two-man team.
First place with a score of 70 went to Carlos Garcia and Susan Houston. Second place with a 71 went to Jeff and Tabitha Warren.
Closest to the pin on No. 3 was won by Jan Godwin, while Clyde Geelen won on No. 10.
Longest putt went to Tabitha Warren on No. 7 and Don Goodnight on No. 17.
Youth baseball
Eastern Randolph won two games Sunday over Bunker Hill to win the 8U Western North Carolina Cal Ripken Area 4 Tournament at Faith Field.
East Rowan’s 10U all-stars play Thursday at 6 p.m. against Eastern Randolph in the WNC Cal Ripken Area 4 tournament in Lexington.n East Rowan’s 11U all-stars play Thursday at 8 p.m. against Eastern Randolph in the WNC Cal Ripken Area 4 Tournament in Ramseur.
East Rowan’s 12U all-stars play Thursday at 8 p.m. against Union County East in the WNC Cal Ripken Area 4 Tournament in Unionville.
The Rowan Little League 11-12 all-stars started district play with two wins — beating Spencer 16-10 and Winston Salem Nationals 12-7 over the weekend.
In Saturday’s game against Spencer, John Yang and Trevor Atwood led a 16-hit attack with three hits apiece. Contributing two hits were Geoffrey Lillywhite, Austin Love, Owen White, and Alex Yang.
Atwood (grand slam) and Jonathan Luther homered. White was the winning pitcher.
Henderson Lentz and Hayden Setzer homered for Spencer.
At Winston Salem, Rowan jumped out to an early 12-1 lead, led by Atwood’s second grand slam of the weekend. Lillywhite, Love, Atwood, Luther and Tyler Wheeler each contributed two hits. Love was the winning pitcher, with Lillywhite earning the save.
Minor leagues
Marcus Semien’s RBI single in the 13th inning lifted Kannapolis to a 5-4 win against Asheville late Sunday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Brady Shoemaker homered as Kannapolis pummeled Greensboro 13-1 on Monday.
Soccer camp
Salisbury Academy’s soccer camp will be held on July 11-15.
The camp for grades 4-8 will be conducted from 1-4 daily and will be directed by former Salisbury coach Tom Sexton.

Salisbury Parks & Recreation will conduct a youth baseball camp at Salisbury Community Park on July 11-14 from 9-noon.
The instructor will be Justin Morgan who played at Radford and is an assistant coach at Salisbury High.
