Authorities continued to gather information Sunday on an apparent drowning Saturday of a young man in the swimming area at Lake Norman State Park.
The park is located near Troutman in Iredell County.
The identify of the man, said to be in his early 20s, has been held pending notification of family. Language barriers in the case have made some communications difficult, according to reports.
The victim was with a Hispanic church group from Kannapolis. He was among 40 to 50 church members who camped at the state park Friday night.
On Saturday morning, the church members were swimming in a designated area at the park, and the young man was last seen about 10:30 a.m.
No one reported him missing until a person not connected with the group came upon a body at the bottom of the lake just after 1 p.m.
The body was found about 50 feet from the shore in about 6 feet of water.
Lake Norman State Park Superintendent Casey Rhinehart said Sunday he was waiting on a medical examinerís report to determine that the manís death was definitely a drowning and not caused by a medical problem before he went under.
It would be the parkís first drowning this year.
