The Kannapolis American Legion team split a doubleheader with Wilkes at Webb Field on Saturday.
Kannapolis won the opener 12-3 behind a strong start by Luke Pepper, who made it into the sixth inning. Caleb Jackson earned a save.
John Wallace, who is transferring to Catawba from Lynchburg, went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Zach Jones went 3-for-3.
Will Shepard homered for Wilkes, and Ryan Harrold went 2-for-3.
n In the second game, Kannapolis fell 6-1.
Wallace homered for Kannapolisí lone run, but Aaron Sparks was dominant on the mound for Wilkes.
Harrold went 3-for-3 for Wilkes, and Alex Minton hit a home run.
Dylan May took the loss.
Kannapolis (5-10) still has a chance to finish in the top eight in the Southern Division of Area III and make the playoffs, although the schedule isnít favorable and Kannapolis needs at least one more win.
Kannapolis plays at Rowan tonight, takes on Rowan at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Monday, and then finishes the regular season in a game at Mocksville on Tuesday.
Rowan and Mocksville are the divisionís top two teams.
Kannapolis is currently ahead of the Mooresville Legends (5-11), and Statesville has completed the regular season at 5-13. The Legends have games remaining against Wilkes and Mocksville.
The Legends swept Kannapolis, so they would have the edge on Kannapolis if the teams wind up in a tie.
A three-way tie for eighth is still a possibility if Kannapolis loses its remaining three and the Legends lose their last two.
n The Area III All-Star Game will be played July 6 at Asheboroís McCrary Park.
n Minor leagues
The Kannapolis Intimidators fell 5-1 to Asheville on Saturday, managing just four hits and going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) hit a lot of line drives at defenders in the first half of the Carolina League season, but heís picked it up recently and has gone (16-for-55, .391) on a recent warm streak. Heís pushed his batting average from .210 to .225.
n Tacomaís Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) had a hit in his first at-bat in a late game on Saturday against Fresno to boost his batting average to .526.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) went 1-for-3 and drove in a run on Saturday for Hagerstown. Mooreís teammate Bryce Harper has stolen five bases in the last two days.
n Keegan Linza (North Rowan) pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Bristol in a 13-6 win against Burlington on Saturday. Linza struck out two.
n Catcher Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) was moved up from the Danville team to the roster of the Lynchburg Hillcats in the Carolina League.
n Wood bat leagues
Thomasvilleís J.J. Jankowski (Catawba) struck out eight batters in five innings on Saturday while allowing one run.
n Noah update
Appalachian State rising sophomore Noah Holmes (East Rowan) isnít playing right now.
Heís resting a sore shoulder and is working out with the Rowan County American Legion team.
Holmes played briefly this summer with the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League and is likely to play with the Copperheads next summer.
n Local golf
The 33rd annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur golf tournament will hold qualifying on July 7-9 at Corbin Hills.
Residents of Rowan and members of Rowan clubs are eligible.
The entry fee is $20. Entry deadline is July 6. Tee times and pairings will be posted July 7.
Qualifying is by stroke play. The low 31 qualifiers and defending champ Ronnie Eidson advance to match play on July 15-17. If there are ties for the final qualifying spots, a sudden-death playoff will be held on July 11 at 5:30 p.m.
n McCanless held its second Junior Mac tournament of the summer.
Charlie Barr shot 47 to win the 9-under division. Ben Childress shot 49 for second place. Gavin Sprinkle shot 52, Landon Shuping 54 and Brodie Perry 60.
Nick Lyerly paced the 10-13 division with a 38. Bryson Sprinkle shot 39. Michael Childress shot 41, Mason Basinger 44, Alex Miller 53 and Ben Rollins 53.
In the 14-17 boys division, Luke Setzer won with a 43.
Collin Darnell shot 47. Kirk Kovach finished at 51, with Jacob Durham at 52 and Clay Cranford at 56.
In the 14-17 girls division, Grace Stokes shot 49, and Kathryn Marcum carded a 52.
Longest drive winners were Barr, Lyerly and Setzer.
The next tournament is on July 14 at 2 p.m.
n ER Diamond Sports
East Rowanís 8U all-star team lost a high-scoring elimination game to Davidson County 29-20 Friday at Faith Field in the Western North Carolina Cal Ripken Area 4 tournament.
East was 1-2 in the double- elimination event.
Eastern Randolph eliminated Sherrillís Ford at Granite Quarryís Mathis Field 15-3 on Friday. Bunker Hill stayed unbeaten with a 14-4 win over North Piedmont at Faith Field on Friday night.
n Soccer camp
Salisbury Academy soccer camp will be held on July 11-15.
The camp for ages 4-8 will be conducted from 1-4 daily.
The camp will be directed by former Salisbury coach Tom Sexton.
