Area sports briefs: Sands hits five homers in five days

Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit yet another home run on Sunday for Albuquerque in an 8-3 loss to Iowa. Sands, who is batting .398 during his Triple A stops, has hit five homers in five days.
n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus) had three more hits on Sunday in Tacomaís 9-4 win against Las Vegas and is batting .500 since his promotion to the Pacific Coast League.
n Wade Moore (West Rowan, Catawba) knocked in his 21st run for Hagerstown on Sunday in an 8-4 loss to Greensboro.
n Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) went 1-for-3 as Winston-Salem beat Lynchburg 5-3 on Sunday.
n Wood bat leagues
Ryan Bostian (South Rowan, Catawba) homered and had three RBIs for Asheboro in a recent 10-8 Coastal Plain League loss to Thomasville. Trey Holmes (East Rowan) had two hits for the Copperheads.
Thomasville beat Asheboro 4-3 on Sunday despite another homer by Bostian. Bostian connected off his Catawba teammate J.J. Jankowski in the sixth. Holmes knocked in one run for Asheboro.
Jankowski didnít get the win, but he pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
n Preston Troutman (East) is playing well for the Pineville Pioneers of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. Through 17 games, Troutman is batting .333 with four doubles and six steals.
n Blake Houston (South, Catawba) is batting .270 in 14 games with the Morganton Aggies of the SCBL.
n John J. Tuttle (A.L. Brown, Catawba) pitches for Morganton and has a 1.76 ERA and 15 Ks in 151/3 innings.
n Forest City Owl Nick Lomascolo (Catawba) dominated on Sunday, holding Gastoniaís Grizzlies to two hits in seven innings in a 4-0 win.
n American Legion
The Mooresville Moors broke out of their hitting slump with a 14-4 win against Kannapolis at Webb Field on Sunday.
Jake Beaver went 5-for-6 with two homers, and Jesse Seaford went 4-for-4 for the Moors, who got strong pitching from young Lake Norman High standout John Stires.
Nate Sexton took the loss. Dylan May, who is headed to Catawba, went 2-for-3 for Kannapolis, and Taylor West belted two home runs.
n Rowan is at home tonight against Stanly County, while South Rowan is at home against Wilkes County.
n College baseball
UNC Pembroke pitcher Thomas (East Rowan) made the Presidential Scholar roll announced by the Peach Belt Conference.
Allen, who plays for the Rowan County American Legion team, was 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA as a freshman at UNC Pembroke.
n Local golf
Arnold Herring made a hole-in-one on No. 8 at Crescent on Friday.
Herring aced the 137-yard hole with a 7-iron. He was playing with Rufty Patterson, Frank Starkey and Gary Veach.
n The 33rd annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur golf tournament will have qualifying on July 7-9 at Corbin Hills.
Residents of Rowan and members of Rowan clubs are eligible.
The entry fee is $20. Entry deadline is July 6. Tee times and pairings will be posted July 7.
Qualifying is by stroke play. The low 31 qualifiers and defending champ Ronnie Eidson advance to match play on July 15-17. If there are ties for the final qualifying spots, a sudden-death playoff will be held on July 11 at 5:30 p.m.
n The McCanless Couples played nine holes with a four-man Captainís Choice format.
Winning was the team of Jeff and Tabbitha Warren, Yvonne Barger and Terrol Kendall. Matt and Sharon Miller, Jan Godwin and Harry Owens finished second.
Monica Greene won closest to the pin, while Carlos Garcia won longest putt.
The Couples recently returned from a trip to Pinehurstís Seven Lakes and Little River.
n Wrestling camp
East Rowan Wrestling Camp is June 27, 28 and 29 from 9-noon daily. The cost is $40. Pay in the front office on the first day. The camp is for wrestlers from kindergarten through rising seniors. East assistant Danny Misenheimer and Mooresville assistant Garry Eller will lead the camp.
