Area briefs: Miller gets victory

West Rowanís Matt Miller was the winning pitcher for Mocksville in a 5-1 American Legion win against the Mooresville Moors on Wednesday night.
It was a showdown of top teams in the Southern Division. Mocksville improved to 8-6 overall and 7-2 in the league, while the Moors (9-4, 7-3) were hurt by errors. Only two of Mocksvilleís runs were earned.
n Major leagues
Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) earned his second win of the season on Wednesday as the New York Mets and Oakland Aís staged a marathon.
Parnell (2-1) pitched a scoreless top of the 13th and was the winner when the Mets scored in the bottom half.
n Minor leagues
Bristolís Keegan Linza (North Rowan) made his pro debut in the Appalachian League on Wednesday by pitching a scoreless seventh inning in a 4-3 win against Greeneville, Tenn.
n Danvilleís Ryan Query (A.L. Brown) was 0-for-1 with two walks in a 1-0 loss to Pulaski on Wednesday.
n Albuquerqueís Jerry Sands (Catawba) smacked his seventh homer in Triple A in a 5-4 loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
n State Games
Rowan Countyís Bradley Robbins (East Rowan) and Andy Austin (East) and South Rowan Legion player Weston Smith (NW Cabarrus) competed for Region 6 in the State Games tournament for rising seniors that was held in Winston-Salem at Wake Forest and BB&T Ballpark.
Other SPC players on the Region 6 team were Travis Watkins (Cox Mill), Blake Sides (Hickory Ridge), Brody Koerner (Robinson) and Jake Kimble (Mount Pleasant).
n Local golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association hosted its annual Member-Guest event on Tuesday.
Low Net went to the team of Susan Morris and Dana Soobey.

The Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department will conduct a youth soccer camp at the Salisbury Community Park July 11-14 from 9-noon.
Drew Griffith, an All-State high school player and a four-year starter at UNC Greensboro, will be the instructor.
