As part of a national health initiative, the Lambda Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. presented their annual Health Fair on May 21 at Carolina Mall, Concord.
Participating vendors from the area represented a variety of health-related areas, including Health Alliance CMC, American Red Cross, Cabarrus County Senior Center,New York Life Insurance Company; Oracle LLC and Duke Medicine, to name a few.
Visitors had a variety of displays and health-promoting activities to explore. A number of onlookers had no idea that resources existed in Cabarrus County such as support groups and counseling for caregivers; resources and special programs for the elderly, respite care, dental specialists for children and a number of other services and products.
Many took advantage of the free health screenings for hypertension, diabetes or bone marrow tests. The American Red Cross delivered information on disaster preparation ó what to do in case of a hurricane, fire, tornado or other natural calamity.
The ultimate goal was to encourage people to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and, most importantly, where to get assistance and resources.
On May 23, Lambda Upsilon Omega held a luncheon in Concord in honor of the young women they mentor óEmerging Young Leaders {EYL} and their mothers. This special program was commemorated by the sorority on the campus of Barber Scotia College in Concord.
Three local high school seniors, Micah Grier, Jolyn Black and Keyanna Weaver, each received a scholarship of $500 to attend college in the fall.
Alisha Tatum delivered the keynote speech encouraging the young ladies to continue striving toward their goals, to make their best effort and to never give up.
