SALISBURY — A Salisbury woman was charged with felony drug possession Wednesday afternoon as she was on her way to a Salisbury pharmacy to refill a prescription, the Salisbury Police Department reported today.
Kayla Leigh Brown, 24, was a passenger in an Oldsmobile that turned around at a checkpoint at the intersection of South Shaver Street and Park Avenue. The car was stopped on East Innes Street, and when officers asked the driver and passengers in the car why they avoided the checkpoint, they said they thought there was a wreck, and were on their way to the pharmacy.
Officer Felicia Gibson asked to see the pill bottles, which were for oxycodone, and had someone else’s name on it, not Brown’s, the report said.
Inside the bottles were six whole pills and two half pills, 15 milligrams each of oxycodone. Also found inside Brown’s makeup bag was a small bag of 2.3 grams of marijuana and a small plastic straw with residue inside, the report said.
Brown, of 165 Knollview Drive, Salisbury, was charged with felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was given a $1,500 secured bond.
According to the N.C. Department of Corrections, Brown’s record dates back to 2004, and she has been convicted of credit card theft, larceny of firearms, larceny of a motor vehicle and breaking and entering vehicles. Brown served eight months in prison in 2005 where she had four infractions, including for disobeying orders.
