Theresa Pierce Teacher of the Year

SALISBURY — Theresa Pierce, lead teacher and curriculum coach at Overton Elementary School, is the 2011 Rowan-Salisbury School System teacher of the year.
School system officials made the announcement this morning during the annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast at the Holiday Inn.
The Rowan County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the breakfast and presented Pierce with a check for $1,000 to be used for her school or classroom. Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education Chairman Dr. Jim Emerson also presented Pierce with a check for $1,000, a new laptop and a new printer.
Students greeted Pierce at Overton for a surprise celebration after the breakfast.
Daniel Trivette, who teaches band at West Rowan High School, was the runner up. He received a gift certificate donated by Dr. Alan King of Creative Teaching Aids.
Other finalist were Jason Harwood, of Rockwell Elementary School; Sallie Hundley, North Rowan High School; and Sherry Lyerly-Tarner, Southeast Middle School.
Teachers of the year from all 35 schools received certificates from Superintendent Dr. Judy Grissom. In addition, they all received mugs from the Chamber filled with items donated from Office Depot, a tote bag from Office Depot and a “day spa” from Greystone Salon & Spa.
