North Rowan concert Tuesday
Published 12:00 am Saturday, May 21, 2011
The North Rowan High School concert and jazz bands and North Rowan Middle eighth-grade band will present their annual Spring Concert Tuesday.
The concert band will be featured performing ě1812 Overtureî one of Tchaikovskyís greatest works.
This monumental selection depicts through music the story of Napoleanís ill-advised attempt to invade and conquer Russia in the winter of 1812.
The music allows the listener to ěseeî the entire war including the seemingly impossible Russian victory over the mighty French Army. David Crews, NRHS English Department chair will offer the audience a brief historical explanation of this monumental piece.
The concert bandís program will also include ěMountain Danceî by Davidson County resident/composer Ed Kiefer.
The North Jazz Band will perform jazz/swing selections including Glen Millerís audience favorite ěIn the Mood.î The eighth-grade band will perform ěAwakening Hills,î ěNew England Festivalî and ěDevil With the Blue Dress.î
The North Rowan HS and MS Bands are directed by Keith and Andrew Howe. Tyler Howe, 2011 Catawba College graduate, will guest conduct the jazz band.
The 7 p.m. concert is free to the public in the North Rowan High School auditorium.
