Pfeiffer University announces three gifts — one from a national foundation and two from private donors — to fund capital improvements that will further the department of nursing’s standing as a leader in training qualified nurses in North Carolina.
The Pittsburgh-based Alcoa Foundation (facilitated locally through its Badin plant) has awarded Pfeiffer a $13,000 grant as part of its Global Education and Workplace Skills initiative to support the development of a medical/surgical patient care station, one of eight to be included in a clinical learning laboratory on Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus. The laboratories are designed to offer experiences that simulate realistic patient care in an actual clinical setting.
In addition, two gifts from Pfeiffer University alumni, each for $20,000, will support other renovations to Harris Science Hall to enhance the experience of nursing students. Harold (‘63) and Mary Earnhardt (‘64) Eagle will support a labor and delivery patient care station that will bear their name. An observation room on the unit will be named in memory of Peggy R. Sloan, the late wife of Richard Sloan (‘54).
“Through their generous gifts, community leaders such as Alcoa and our alumni recognize the value of a Pfeiffer education for our students,” said Michael C. Miller, president of Pfeiffer University.
“We know that students who learn in simulated environments develop better critical thinking skills, self-confidence and overall competence than students who don’t. It’s our obligation to increase our students’ likelihood for academic and long-term professional success and we are proud to partner with those who can help us do so.”
