Cannon Schoolto host eveningof arts, jazz
CONCORD ó Cannon School invites families in the Concord, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville and Charlotte communities to enjoy an evening of art and jazz on Friday. The schoolís annual Arts Jam offers an eclectic mix of sights and sounds during musical performances and hands-on art activities.
Festivities will take place on Cannonís campus, located at 5801 Poplar Tent Road in Concord. The event is free and open to the public beginning at 5 p.m.
ěArts Jam is an unforgettable celebration of music, dance, theater and visual arts,î said Belinda Armstrong, Cannonís fine arts department chair. ěParticipants of all ages can be creative and make something unique, learn a new dance, or relax to the cool sounds of jazz on the lawn. It will be a blast.î
Headliners include Omimeo Mime Theatre, Charlotteís premier mime ensemble; award-winning jazz ensemble, Air Apparent; and the Scrap Exchange, which will return to campus to help guests of all ages turn clean, reusable industrial discards into one-of-a-kind items ranging from hats and rockets to puppets and handbags.
Jazz on the Lawn will begin at 6:45 p.m., when Cannonís upper school jazz musicians open for Air Apparent, whose violinist and leader, Armen Boyajian, will perform with the students.
Cannon School gets grant for gym floor
CONCORD ń Cannon School has received a $74,049 grant from the Cannon Foundation to fund the installation of new flooring in one of the schoolís gyms. The grant is a critical investment in Cannonís commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for students using the gym.
The new flooring, to be installed over the summer, will replace the current blue rubberized flooring that was installed several years ago.
Over the years, the physical education and extracurricular activities of students have made new flooring essential to the usability of this area. The new flooring will enable the school to use the gym for a full range of healthy activities for Cannon students, including robust physical education.
The enhanced gym will also house competitive contests hosted by Cannon School, including Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) and North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) tournaments, and provide greater flexibility and usage for interscholastic events, practices, camps and school-wide activities.
Cannon School is a member of the CISAA with Charlotte Christian School, Charlotte Country Day School, Charlotte Latin School and Providence Day School.
