Man uses soda to douse flames

Larry Wheeler shook up four two-liter sodas and sprayed them on a fire in a bedroom of his home at 506 S. Long St. this afternoon.
The Cherry Pepsi and Mello Yello combination worked for a moment, Wheeler said.
“It didn’t kill it, but it died down a little bit,” he said.
So he went next door to the home of Matthew Jones, who brought two fire extinguishers over, and used them until the fire went out.
The fire was contained to one bedroom. Firefighters on scene told Wheeler and his wife, Virginia, that a drop cord behind a mirrored dresser in the bedroom got too hot and sparked a fire. The dresser caught fire, along with a wall in the bedroom. Wheeler pulled the dresser from the wall to keep it from spreading, he said.
Spencer, East Spencer, Union and Millers Ferry fire departments responded.
Also living at the home is Marcus Corry, who was in the backyard with Wheeler when the fire started. Virginia Wheeler was at work when she got the call about the fire.
