Catawbaís top-seeded baseball team lost to sixth-seeded Newberry 4-2 in the opening round of the SAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Forest City.
Nick Lomascolo took the loss despite pitching a complete game and allowing only three hits.
Chris Dula homered for the Indians, and Josh Hohn had two hits.
Catawba plays in an elimination game today at noon.
n Appalachian Stateís Trey Holmes (East Rowan) had a two-run single in the seventh to lift the Mountaineers to an 8-6 win against Presbyterian on Tuesday.
n Jason Ridenhour (North Rowan) pitched Bryan to a 2-1 win against Milligan. Bill Veal (North) had two RBIs for Bryan in a 6-5 loss to Milligan.
n Prep baseball
Coming off an emotional NPC win over West Iredell on Tuesday, Carson started slowly on Wednesday against nonconference foe Hickory Ridge before surging to a 9-1 victory.
The Cougars (13-6) led only 2-1 after three inning but came up with a seven-run fourth to break it open. Kyle Youngo had a two-run double, followed by a two-run single by Kyle Bridges. Gavin Peeler then singled home two runs on his second-at bat of the inning.
ěEmotionally, we were drained,î coach Chris Cauble said. ěAs the game wore on, we got into it. Hickory Ridge is one of those teams we might be paired up with in the first round of the playoffs so it was important we had a good showing to prove we could beat them.î
Ethan Free was the winner, going four innings and striking out four.
East Rowan never led and fell to 4A West Forsyth on Wednesday 6-2.
Andy Austin hit a homer for the Mustangs (14-5).
n College softball
Catawbaís softball team beat Mars Hill 5-0 in the opening round of the SAC Tournament in Jefferson City, Tenn.
Emily Huneycutt pitched a five-hit shutout. Alli Justice hit her seventh homer and drove in three runs. Tara Gibbs had two hits.
n Pro baseball
New York Mets reliever Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) has been dealing with an issue with his right middle finger. Parnell told reporters the ailment makes it hard for him to grip the baseball.
He appeared briefly Tuesday night, allowing one hit and recording a strikeout.
n The Kannapolis Intimidators blew a 5-0 lead but managed to beat the West Virginia Power 6-5 on Wednesday morning at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Dan Black had the game-deciding hit in the seventh. Mike Blanke and Juan Silverio had two-run doubles for the Intimidators.
n Prep softball
Catherine Whitley hit two homers as West Rowan outslugged South Rowan 13-8 for an NPC win on Wednesday.
Lauryn Shulenberger also homered as the Falcons overcame a 7-1 deficit. Sarah Perrine went 3-for-3 and stole three bases.
n Prep tennis
Salisbury beat East Davidson 9-0 on Wednesday.
Gray Stone freshman John Latimer won the YVC singles championship on Tuesday.
n Prep sportsmanship
West Iredell head football coach and AD Mark Weycker was one of eight Homer Thompson Memorial awards as a coach who made a difference and served as a role model.
n Middle school track
Erwinís boys won their second straight Rowan County Conference championship.
The Eagles scored 191 points. Mooresville was second with 104.
North Rowanís Jareke Chambers was Field Events MVP, Erwinís Deshawn Gibson was Sprints MVP, and Erwinís Conor Honeycutt was Distance MVP.

Erwin won all its track meets this season, averaged 129 points per meet and set several school records.
n Marshall Shank cleared 12 feet in the pole vault at March 29.
n Gibson, Josh Little, Dustin Evans and Shank ran 3:56.41 at North Rowan in the 4×400 to break a 16-year-old mark.n On April 11 at East Rowan, Dustin Humphrey, Evans, Shank and Tad Bowers broke the school mark in the 4×200 relay record with a time of 1:45.10.
n Tyler Mason threw 142 feet, 2 inches in the discus to break that record in a meet at East.
n Middle school baseball
China Grove defeated Knox 10-3.
Tyler Rary was the winning pitcher for the Red Devils (5-4).
Austin Corriher and Austin Lear had two hits each. Lear hit a home run.
China Grove plays at home today against North Rowan.
n Middle school tennis
Sacred Heartís boys defeated Salisbury Academy 6-3.
The Dolphins take on Salisbury Academy again on May 6.
n North Rowan fell 7-2 to Mooresville.
Gabriel Scheve won his singles match for the Mavericks,while Mark Moore and Ryan Dangerfield prevailed in doubles.
n Knox defeated China Grove 7-2. Singles winners for the Trojans were Abraham Post, David Derrick, Evan Dunn and Quson Brown. Post-Zane Gray, Derrick-Robbie Slate and Dunn-Brown won in doubles.
n Middle school golf
Salisbury Academy finished second in a tri-match at Warrior Golf Club. The Jaguarsí 166 total was six strokes off the pace of Concordia (160) and 24 strokes better than third place Sacred Heart (190).
Pacing the Jaguars was medalist Isabella Rusher with 37. She was followed by Grace Yatawara with 41, Gabe Steinman and Coleman Bergsma with 44s, Robbie Bergstone (54), Boyd Temple (56) and Abby Lee (61).
n Middle school soccer
North Rowanís boys battled to a 1-1 draw with Mooresville. Narciso Alvarez scored for the Mavericks. Jesus Huerta had the assist.
n Southeastís girls defeated Corriher-Lipe 1-0. Scoring for the Patriots was Grace Rohl off a perfectly placed corner by Karla Fragoso.
n Southeastís boys defeated Corriher-Lipe 1-0 in a well-played match.
Scoring for Southeast was Silvestre Lopez on an assist from Jose Viveros.
n Knoxís boys beat China Grove 6-0. Hector Salinas, Michael Brown, Felix Carillo and Kevin Chavez scored the goals.
n Youth baseball
The Rowan Razorbacks 12U baseball team competed in the Triad Sports Invitational in Lexington.
The Razorbacks went 2-1 on a rain-shortened weekend.
The highlight was a four-inning perfect game thrown by Dillon Norton against the Pittsylvania County (Va.) Warriors. He struck out nine of 12 batters in an 11-0 win.
Other Razorbacks who played in the perfect game included Tyler Belk, Isaac Bell, Walker Joyce, Geoffrey Lillywhite, Chandler Norton Christopher Reynolds, Owen White, Hayden Wilson and Bryant Young.
The coaches are Mike Belk, Steve Norton and Scott Young.
n The Rowan Hawks rolled over Concord Middle School 26-6. Pearce Wilhelm, Dylan Snider and Josh Holt had three hits each, while Austin Love, Noah Jarrett and Ben Shoaf collected two each.
Holt hit a two-run homer to lead the 17-hit attack. Jarrett was the winning pitcher for the Hawks (11-3).
The Hawks play Power Cross of Statesville on Thursday afternoon at West Middle.
n Youth football
The Salisbury 49ers played four games on Sunday.
Behind Victor Edwardsí 202 rushing yards on four carries the 49ers (ages 5-6) beat the Dolphins 21-6.
The 49ers (ages 7-8) lost to the Jaguars 13-7 despite 103 yards on the ground by Mike McLean.
The 49ers (ages 9-10) beat the Jaguars 27-0.
The 49ers (ages 11-12) lost to the Dolphins 21-6. Darius Jackson scored for the 49ers.
n Local golf
The Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association played a low gross-low net event on Tuesday.
Phyllis Durland won low gross and was followed by Becky Isenhour and Faye Cline. Low net went to Toni Iossi. Next were Gail Capone and Joy Maughmer.
n South fundraiser
The South Rowan Football team is holding a fundraiser to help upgrade fieldhouse facilities. The team will host its first annual Cow Plop Bingo event at Donnell Stadium on Saturday May 14, from 5-9 p.m.
There will be games, food, and lots of cow chips.
There will be nine chances to win if one of the cows leaves a little something for you in your 4×4 square. Each square is $10. If you are interested in purchasing a square, contact South Rowan High school at 704-857-1161. Go by the school to purchase at the front desk or purchase on the day of the event.
